Sports Performance

Many sportsmen and women now use hypnotherapy to enhance their performance in their chosen sport. Taking part in any sport at a competitive level involves a great deal of physical control and mental concentration.

Hypnosis can provide both of these and can be used in both the professional or amateur world to enhance performance. For instance, world champion middleweight boxer, Glenn Catley ( pictured right ) used hypnotherapy to help him gain his world championship title.

So how does it work?

Our subconscious mind does not differentiate between imagination and reality. This has tremendous implications for sportspeople who either do not have the time or the stamina to physically practise sufficiently to continue increasing their skills.

It’s now fully understood that mental rehearsal is as useful as physical practise, as the muscles “remember” the action in exactly the same way.

If two teams are equal in terms of skill, then it will be the difference in their mental preparation that will determine the outcome.

Hypnotherapy can create positive focus and new automatic response patterns to achieve your full potential. So for instance, imagine that you want to perfect a particular response to a move by your opponent. This is similar to the automatic response that we use if we open a cupboard and a glass falls out. Our immediate response is to try to catch the glass and don’t need to think about it. This is similar to the way that we will perfect the response to an opponent. By visualisation techniques, we will create automatic responses, so removing your thinking time delay.

You can use visualisation techniques to:

  • Increase your agility
  • Improve your co-ordination
  • Improve your concentration
  • Refine your technique
  • Heighten your awareness of body position
  • Eliminate inhibiting thoughts about your performance
  • Increase your capacity for enjoying sport
  • Enhance physical capabilities such as breathing techniques

By using hypnotherapy, we can also remove any negative triggers or responses due to pre-competition nerves or self-belief issues, so maximising your full potential to succeed, with confidence.

So by using hypnotherapy, you will be able to:

  • Overcome fears and pressures from other teams / opponents
  • Programme yourself for a perfect game
  • Ensure that you have a winning attitude
  • Accomplish a specific goal for personal achievement

The number of hypnotherapy sessions needed depend on your goals and objectives and will be discussed at the initial consultation.
